Sydney ZumMallen

Born deep in the heart of Texas, Cellist and Viola da Gamba player Sydney ZumMallen is an active freelancer who has recently relocated back to the DFW area. The winner of The Juilliard School’s inaugural baroque cello concerto competition, Sydney made her solo debut with Juilliard415 at Alice Tully Hall in New York under the direction of Pablo Heras-Casado in the fall of 2019.

A versatile musician, Sydney embarked on her career as a baroque specialist under the mentorship of Paul Leenhouts, touring extensively with his ensemble Fantasmi throughout South America and Europe. She has also enjoyed tours across Italy with Fabio Bonizzoni, and across Europe and New Zealand with Robert Mealy and Juilliard415.

During her studies at the University of North Texas, The Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and The Juilliard School, she enjoyed working with musicians from all over the world including Jaap ter Linden, Kristin von der Goltz, Albert Brüggen, and Richte van der Meer. She has also worked extensively with Rachel Podger, Maasaki Suzuki, Richard Egarr, and Nicholas McGegan, with whom she led the continuo group in The Juilliard School’s acclaimed production of Handel’s Rinaldo in February of 2020.

Sydney is a founding member of the period ensemble, Digital Camerata, that prides themselves on their exciting collaborations with artists of all kinds. Sydney received her master’s degree from The Juilliard School in the spring of 2020, where she was a recipient of the Historical Performance Scholarship and a student of Phoebe Carrai and Sarah Cunningham.

Throughout her studies, she has given private lessons to beginner cello students as well as adult amateurs and young professionals. Additionally, she has given masterclasses to students from conservatories all over the world. Her goals as a teacher are to provide a strong technical foundation in order for students to perform at the highest musical level. Her goals for her students are to give them knowledge and tools in order to think and make musical decisions for themselves. Every person and musician is different and it is important for everyone to ask questions and express their individual personalities through music. Music is not meant to be played the same way by every musician.

Sydney grew up not only with a heart for music, but with a deep love for cats. When she is not performing, Sydney enjoys knitting, baking for her friends, and relaxing with a cup of coffee and her cat, Gus.
